I have amassed considerable experience with these substances in both Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD). This has become a very hot topic of discussion in magazines, newspapers, and on television. It was once thought to be a disorder only seen in children, but research has shown it to be very prevalent in adults as well. Conventional treatment remains quite controversial, as side effects and medical studies have created doubt about their safety. In this regard, I find most people and parents in particular, open to the idea of an all-natural non-pharmaceutical approach. One example....is of a small boy, about six years old with uncontrolled hyperactivity, brought to me by his mother . The boy had the standard evaluation for ADHD and had been on Ritalin for a considerable amount of time. Both his mother and teacher noted profound side effects such as lethargy in class, poor appetite, with weight loss and mood swings. Getting him to take the medicine was like pulling teeth. However, without the drug the boy could literally not sit still--neither in class nor at home playing. As one might expect his mother was beside herself and looking for any possible solution. After informing her about Maritime Pine Plus®, she was understandably anxious to try anything. I started the boy on small amounts and rapidly increased it to "saturation dose."
I received a phone call at
home from the boy's mother five days after initiating treatment. She was
initially difficult to understand due to the ecstasy in her voice. After
telling her to slow down, she reported that her
boy was doing wonderfully. The most
unbelievable part, though, was that she noticed a change in him within 24
hours of starting the substance. He was now alert and attentive in class,
could play quietly at home, and was eating better. His moods and behavior
patterns, previously a roller coaster ride, were now smooth and even.
Noticing how the compound was making him feel, the boy anxiously asked for
each dose. His mother could not believe the results and she praised the
compound profusely for what it had done for her son.
This was one of my first experiences with
Maritime Pine and ADD/ ADHD. One of my most recent examples was of a
teenager brought to me by his mother with classic Attention Deficit
Disorder. Putting forth maximum effort in school could not prevent his
concentration and focus from wandering. His grades suffered greatly, and as
a result, so did his self-esteem. He came to my office a very depressed
young man with a very worried mother. We discussed conventional treatments,
but his mother was adamantly against them. I told her about Maritime Pine,
and she seemed quite skeptical that it could work. After telling her of my
considerable experience with the substance in ADD, she agreed to try it for
one month. Again, I started slowly, and rapidly advanced him to saturation
dose. They returned for follow-up two weeks later and informed me that it
had worked. He was now able to concentrate in school and his homework and
test scores were already improving. As a result, he now experienced a
newfound confidence in himself and the previously noted depression had
lifted. She too praised this compound as a miracle and thanked me profusely
for suggesting it. From Nature's Miracle II, Gary Fishbach, M.D. JoAnne Boffey was born February 7, 1986, at 8:58 a.m. She had normal birth weight. She was born on time, but, her color was not right, her skin was black and she swelled. JoAnne was diagnosed with H-Flu pneumonia. Two days later her heart developed a blood clot. For the first 2 months of her life, JoAnne was in God's hands. There was not way by human rights she should have survived this trauma. Doctors were amazed at what God did for JoAnne. She was stuffed with tubes and drugs, what a pitiful sight. Miraculously my daughter recovered (from) these 2 months of intensive care, and was released to come home. But this wasn't the end of her problems. My baby has had tubes in and out of her ears so many times. Her adenoids and tonsils were removed. All this means injection of anesthesia each time these surgeries were performed, this is not to mention the pain made. I noticed last year when JoAnne was in first grade that she was hyper, out of control, and fought her brother, and me and from first grade she brought homework home? Well, I talked to her teacher, and she suggested ADD. The teacher had an analysis run on JoAnne. It took much convincing me that my daughter could possibly have ADD. I took her to the doctor, and he said that she had a lot of characteristics of ADD. From that point we decided that JoAnne should go on Ritalin. I believed she started this drug in the 2nd quarter of school late last year, (1991). Her work improved at school, but, at home I still struggled with an angry child. This summer she was diagnosed with gall stones, her whole gall bladder was removed. Once again JoAnne was injected with anesthesia, and potent pain relievers. Upon returning to school this fall, JoAnne is now in second grade, the doctor had put her back on Ritalin. She was good with work until the last part of October, she got a nervous twitch in her face and her attitude appeared to get worse. Well, I took her back to the Dr. and he took Jo off the Ritalin refusing to put her back on it fearing she might have Turrets [Tourette's] Syndrome. I got real worried and frustrated at that point, because I saw my poor daughter deteriorating in front of my eyes. JoAnne's teacher sent letters home letting me know how horrible she was doing in class. By this time she had been bringing homework home, she had just fallen way behind. I took her back to the Dr., he said he could send her to a specialist due to his suspicious thoughts of her having Turrets [Tourette's] Syndrome, but he didn't want to take her to the doctor because he feared the doctor would put her back on Ritalin. I went home confused and ready to give up. That night I went into JoAnne's room, watching her sleep made me cry because she was li9ke a stiff board lying in her bed. I folded my hands together and pleaded with God to take over, and told him I had faith He would administer to my daughter's health. Then the next day while talking to my mother, she introduced Dr. Rosquist's tape to me. Being skeptical, I listened as I was going down the road in my car. The one thing that grabbed by attention was that this herb actually goes into the brain cells. Knowing that ADD is a chemical imbalance of the brain, I began to believe that maybe this product is an answer to my prayer. NOW THE STORY BEGINS.
On November 18, 1993, JoAnne M. Boffey began taking Pycnogenol Prime. WOW!! What a difference this made in just 24 hours. This little girl that was so angry and out of control was changed overnight. She woke up, the first thing I did was yell at her to let her know I was tired and did not want to fight getting her ready for school. She gave a look that loving children give their parents when their feelings are hurt. HA! I was shocked. What could I do? I knelt down and hugged her, I asked her if she was feeling OK. I thought she had the flu or something. The weekend approached, I don't have enough paper to write what those time were like. This first weekend was like being in paradise, my children actually played all weekend together without fighting. My son was getting nervous because he always had to be on his guard with Jo, she hit him for no reason, she beat him up real bad at times. JoAnne actually cleaned her bedroom. Then came downstairs and asked if there was anything she could do for me because she felt like cleaning. Her schoolwork is a testimony in itself, when she was on Ritalin, JoAnne's handwriting and work was great according to the teacher. Then, when she was taken off Ritalin her work and handwriting fell behind, one again, according to her teacher. Now that she is on the Pycnogenol, her handwriting and work is 100% better than when she was on Ritalin. For a change. Today, November 29, 1993, I'm fill-in secretary for JoAnne's school, therefore, I have access to my daughter's classroom. I am so excited that her teacher told me that JoAnne is actually sitting and doing her work, she is actually keeping up with the class. The teacher is thrilled! She wants to know what is going on with JoAnne. I'M EXCITED!
United States Patent SUMMARY OF INVENTION A method for treating ADHD comprising a daily regimen of taking by mouth, a quantity of proanthocyanidin derived from pine bark in a quantity sufficient to relieve symptoms of ADHD but not to exceed approximately 0.625 mg per kg of body weight per dose, every approximately 3.5 to 4.0 hours during the time attenuation of symptoms of ADHD is desired and preferably in addition thereto taking by mouth a quantity of a heterocyclic antidepressant, preferably desipramine in quantities sufficient to attenuate ADHD-related symptoms of lack of cognitive focus. DESCRIPTION OF INVENTION U.S. Pat. No. 4,698,360 discloses a proanthocyanidin derived from conifer bark as a therapeutic agent with a radical scavenger effect useful in treating cerebral involution troubles in the elderly, hypoxia following atherosclerosis, tumors or other illnesses generated by free radicals. U.S. Pat. No. 3,456,407 discloses a method for extracting proanthocyanidins from pine bark. As used herein, the term "proanthocyanidin(s)" and "pycnogenol" refers to the extract from conifer bark meeting the criteria of U.S. Pat. No. 4,698,360. In the present invention, the only useful proanthocyanidin is that derived from conifer bark preferably pine bark such as the bark of the maritime pine. Alleged substitutes for Pycnogenol such as that derived from grape seeds, has not been found effective for the purposes of the present invention. It has been found that Pycnogenol, alone, taken in a regimen of multiple, spaced-apart doses separated by a specific limited range of time, containing a limited range of Pycnogenol concentration is useful in treating ADHD without the side-effects of Ritalin. It has also been found that Pycnogenol taken in accordance with the above regimen together with a heterocyclic antidepressant such as desipramine is particularly useful in treating ADHD with symptoms of "spaciness" or lack of cognitive focus. Additionally, the regimen of the present invention is effective without the concomitant use of caffeine or other stimulants. Pycnogenol is the safe, effective super-antioxidant that helps to relieve many chronic degenerative disorders.
